International Organization for Migration UN Migration Agency Regrets Loss of Life in Tragic Road Accident in Tanzania IOM, the United Nations Migration Agency, moved swiftly to assist victims of a tragic road accident in Tanzania that occurred Thursday (29/03) around 16:30 local time, and took the lives of eight people—including one IOM team member, six refugees and one Tanzanian citizen, who was working alongside the roadway.

Jamal Mohamud, an IOM employee acting as emergency coordinator at the site, said on Friday (30/03), "the accident happened during the transport of 515 Burundians undertaking voluntary return in a convoy of eight buses chartered by IOM."

It is specifically designed to allow the voices of individuals to shine through and provide first-hand insight into the triumphs and challenges of migrants of all backgrounds and at all phases of their migratory journeys. IOM seeks to combat xenophobia and discrimination by appealing to both the head and hearts at a time when so many are exposed to a negative narrative about migration – whether on our social media feeds or on the airwaves. Thus far, IAAM includes 1,200 profiles from across the globe.

IOM seeks to combat xenophobia and discrimination by appealing to both the head and hearts at a time when so many are exposed to a negative narrative about migration – whether on our social media feeds or on the airwaves.

As we enter 2018, we should remember all those who lost their lives not because they lost the will to live, but because of the deadly cloud of conflict, intolerance, and disregard for human life and endeavor.

So, we need to give our attention specifically today to making sure that the Rohingya refugees are not somehow lost in this arc of suffering across this area of the world.

In addition, in seeking to realize the development potential of migrants and the consequential benefits of migration to home and host societies, the global compact is expected to put at the disposal of States a set of guiding principles and related tools to govern migration effectively and humanely.

“Before going through the training programme, I knew nothing about tailoring. I had to learn everything from the ground up. It took me seven months to learn everything but I managed to do it,” Aluel Matiok said. She participated in the tailoring and business skills training run by IOM and now shares a workshop with 13 tailors who produce and sell clothing through a cooperative agreement. Using fabric donated by IOM to help the tailors get their business off the ground, they have produced a number of garments for men and women of various sizes.

Overview

The Asia-Pacific region comprises not only major migrant countries of origin, but also traditional and emerging destination countries. Countries like India and China have become countries of origin, transit and destination simultaneously. Widening North-South economic disparity, coupled with demographic challenges, continues to promote intraregional migration. It is estimated that 43 per cent of Asian migrants move within the region.
